Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus- The Difference
There are 3 Greek words that are translated "hell" in the New Testament of the King James Bible, and they are, hades, gehenna, and tartarus. Why, are there 3 places?, the answer is yes. The Greek word "hades" is translated "hell" 10 times, and it refers to a place where an unsaved person goes immediately upon leaving this life, the same place the rich man of Luke chapter 16 starting at verse 19 was and still is right now. Here are the 10 scriptures that hades is translated "hell", Matt. 11:23, Matt. 16:18, Luke 10:15, Luke 16:23, Acts 2:27, Acts, 2:31, Rev. 1:18, Rev. 6:8, Rev. 20:13, Rev. 20:14.
The Greek word "gehenna" is translated "hell" 12 times, and it refers to the lake of fire where all the lost souls in hades will be cast into after the final judgment, and hades itself will be cast into, for it says in Rev.20:13,14, "......and death and hell {Greek word hades}} delivered up the dead which were in them....... And death and hell { hades} were cast into the lake of fire". Here are the 12 scriptures where gehenna is translated "hell", Matt.5:22, Matt. 5:29, Matt. 5:30, Matt.10:28, Matt.18:9, Matt. 23:15, Matt.23:33, Mark 9:43, Mark 9:45, Mark 9:47, Luke 12:5, James 3:6.
The 3rd Greek word is only translated "hell" once, and that word is "tartarus", and it's in 2 Peter 2:4, and it refers to the bottomless pit where some of the fallen angels are at right now in "chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment" as it says in that verse. These 3 Greek words refer to 3 different places and that's why hell is translated by these 3 Greek words.
